    Managing polyglot systems metadata with hypergraphs

    A single type of data store can hardly fulfill every end-user requirements in the NoSQL world. Therefore, polyglot systems use different types of NoSQL datastores in combination. However, the heterogeneity of the data storage models makes managing the metadata a complex task in such systems, with only a handful of research carried out to address this. In this paper, we propose a hypergraph-based approach for representing the catalog of metadata in a polyglot system. Taking an existing common programming interface to NoSQL systems, we extend and formalize it as hypergraphs for managing metadata. Then, we define design constraints and query transformation rules for three representative data store types. Furthermore, we propose a simple query rewriting algorithm using the catalog itself for these data store types and provide a prototype implementation.     Layered connectors: revisiting the formal basis of architectural connection for complex distributed systems

    The complex distributed systems of nowadays require the dynamic composition of multiple components, which are autonomous and so complex that they can be considered as systems in themselves. These components often use different application protocols and are implemented on top of heterogeneous middleware, which hamper their successful interaction. The explicit and rigorous description and analysis of components interaction is essential in order to enable the dynamic composition of these components. In this paper, we propose a formal approach to represent and reason about interactions between components using layered connectors. Layered connectors describe components interaction at both the application and middleware layers and make explicit the role of middleware in the realisation of this interaction. We provide formal semantics of layered connectors and present an approach for the synthesis of layered connectors in order to enable the dynamic composition of highly heterogeneous components. We validate our approach through a case study in the area of collaborative emergency management

    The OpenKnowledge System: An Interaction-Centered Approach to Knowledge Sharing

    Abstract. The information that is made available through the semantic web will be accessed through complex programs (web-services, sensors, etc.)thatmayinteract in sophisticated ways. Composition guided simply by the specifications of programs ’ inputs and outputs is insufficient to obtain reliable aggregate performance- hence the recognised need for process models to specify the interactions required between programs. These interaction models, however, are traditionally viewed as a consequence of service composition rather than as the focal point for facilitating composition. We describe an operational system that uses models of interaction as the focus for knowledge exchange. Our implementation adopts a peer to peer architecture, thus making minimal assumptions about centralisation of knowledge sources, discovery and interaction control.

    Task-Oriented Uncertainty Evaluation for Linked Data Based on Graph Interlinks

    International audienceFor data sources to ensure providing reliable linked data, they need to indicate information about the (un)certainty of their data based on the views of their consumers. In Addition, uncertainty information in terms of Semantic Web has also to be encoded into a readable, publishable, and exchangeable format to increase the interoperability of systems. This paper introduces a novel approach to evaluate the uncertainty of data in an RDF dataset based on its links with other datasets. We propose to evaluate uncertainty for sets of statements related to user-selected resources by exploiting their similarity interlinks with external resources. Our data-driven approach translates each interlink into a set of links referring to the position of a target dataset from a reference dataset, based on both object and predicate similarities. We show how our approach can be implemented and present an evaluation with real-world datasets. Finally, we discuss updating the publishable uncertainty values

    A Web Service Composition Method Based on OpenAPI Semantic Annotations

    Automatic Web service composition is a research direction aimed to improve the process of aggregating multiple Web services to create some new, specific functionality. The use of semantics is required as the proper semantic model with annotation standards is enabling the automation of reasoning required to solve non-trivial cases. Most previous models are limited in describing service parameters as concepts of a simple hierarchy. Our proposed method is increasing the expressiveness at the parameter level, using concept properties that define attributes expressed by name and type. Concept properties are inherited. The paper also describes how parameters are matched to create, in an automatic manner, valid compositions. Additionally, the composition algorithm is practically used on descriptions of Web services implemented by REST APIs expressed by OpenAPI specifications. Our proposal uses knowledge models (ontologies) to enhance these OpenAPI constructs with JSON-LD semantic annotations in order to obtain better compositions for involved services.
